Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen will visit Tanzania on 14 - 17 March and the Republic of South Africa on 17 - 18 March. This is Prime Minister Vanhanen's first visit to Sub-Saharan Africa during his term of office.

Ministry of Education to become Ministry of Education and Culture

The Government proposes that the name of the Ministry of Education be changed to Ministry of Education and Culture. The President of the Republic is expected on Friday 12 March to submit to Parliament a government proposal on an Act amending section 1 of the Government Act. The act confirming the new name is to enter into force on 1 May 2010.

Eight Foreign Ministers to Lapland

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb will host several European colleagues at an informal meeting in Saariselkä, Finnish Lapland on 12-14 March. The seminar in Lapland, organised at the invitation of Foreign Minister Stubb, will be attended by Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and by the Foreign Ministers of Estonia, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. On the basis of Ashton's presentation, the ministers will hold discussions during the weekend on strengthening the role of the European Union in world politics.

Foreign Minister Stubb to attend the Nordic Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb will participate in the Nordic Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held in Copenhagen on Thursday, 11 March. In accordance with the rotation of the Nordic chairmanship, this meeting will be chaired by Lene Espersen, the new Foreign Minister of Denmark.

OECD assessment completed

On Monday 8 March, the Prime Minister's Office issued the OECD's assessment on the proposals made by the working group on quality issues of working life headed by Jukka Ahtela. The assessment report prepared in English by the OECD and the Finnish summary compiled by the Ministry of Finance are attached below.

Seminar to mark the 70th anniversary of the Winter War

The Government will hold a seminar to mark the 70th anniversary of the Winter War on Saturday 13 March, the date the war ended. President of the Republic Tarja Halonen will open the seminar and Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen will present the closing remarks. The event will be broadcast live on YLE TV1 starting at 11.00.
